PC security

For info: I’m using Windows XP Home edition.
When I first loaded Microsoft Security Essentials (SE) it worked fine. Lately however it takes for ever to start when I switch on the PC (over 20 minutes), or doesn’t start at all.
The icon in the system tray stays red and if I ‘right click’ it the SE screen informs me that the system is off and I should therefore restart it. I click the ‘restart’ button but nothing happens and I have to wait until SE makes its mind up to start in its own time and the icon turns green. I think 20 minutes is far too long to have to wait for the anti virus to start and more worrying the firewall is also off.
I’ve also found that the PC runs far too slow when the SE update starts, is this normal and if not can anyone tell me how can I get it to work correctly?

well that does sound wrong, i would first off suggest doing the usual of booting in safe mode with networking and running (after updating of course) malwarebytes and hijack this and posting the logs just to make sure no nasties have slipped passed the security - which no matter which anti virus you run can happenDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Do you by any chance also have Mcafee security installed ?, if so uninstall it, then go to their website and download, their full remover, this removes stuff that uninstall does not remove.
Also check how much disc space you have left, if it is below 1GB then that is part of the problem.
How much RAM does your computer have, if your machine is quite old, then it may have just 256mb ram, this is not now enough for the bloated software that is around.
To find out, right click on MY COMPUTER, then left click properties, you will then see the details, processor speed and ram.
To see your disc space double left click my computer, then right click on the hard drive (c:), and left click properties.0 -

I took your advice and ran Malwaebytes. No problems found, given a clean bill of health. I dont think its a virus problem though. It's got to be something wrong with Security Essentials????Trying to learn something new every day.0 -

My previous Anti Virus was 'Avast'. which I thought I uninstalled successfully. I've run a search since then but can't find any evidence that it's still lurking somewhere.Trying to learn something new every day.0 -
i would still recommend runing hijack this and posting the log up here for someone to check for youDrop a brand challenge

Switch back to avast, better detection rates, and lighter on resources. How much ram have you got, and what is the commit charge in task manager?!!

I had my first encounter with Microsoft's SE today on XP.
Same sorta problem. Once the Malware has got in, SE is a beast to update, to remove.. a beast.
Gave up on it and dumped it installed Avira. It picked up 4 viruses on first run and pc running a lot,lot faster now.
Combofix found a few things too.0 -
