Don't be such a cheapskate! The only way to arrive in NYC is by the helicopter transfer to Manhattan mid-town. A decent airline should include that in the air fare, but in any case if you can't afford it there's not much point in going to New York.

what's the best/value for money way of travelling to my hotel near grand central station?

Taxi is about $55
Airtrain and Subway about $10 but a long time!!

am i missing anything?

Shuttle bus is an option. Not the PUBLIC bus you understand, but a min van kind of thing, but you will have to share it with other people.

i think we paid about $110 for a limo,as there was 6 of us it worked out cheaper than a few yellow cabs.

Best value is the Airtrain + Subway, only cost $5.00 + $2.00 = $7.00

Takes about 1hr but doable, though I'd avoid rush hour!
Take the E line to Lexington and 3rd, then the 6 to Grandcentral

Traffic can make your taxi\shuttle ride over an hour.

Taxi needs a tip + Toll.
