Cleaning carpets

Does anyone know the best way to clean carpets? We have just moved into a new house where there is carpet in EVERY room - there's even some on the floor of the shed! All the carpets really need cleaning and I want to buy a machine to clean them but I am confused. Which is better

a steam cleaner

a wet and dry cleaner

or a carpet cleaner?

I don't want to buy the wrong one and find that I have wasted my money. ???
Nice to save.

I paid for a blokey to come round £50 the lot and no hassle. Very nice - some jobs are just too much of a faff. :).
This isn't a great money saving tip - but more of an easy life tip ;)

d'oh! the qvc link i put in changed somehow, it was to something with a spongy mop and loads of bottles of cleaning stuff for £17.99, ive seen them use it :-[ on qvc on the usual boot polish soaked carpet and it came up spotless. I will try and find it again! Its in the sale.
