Huge Bill

I have received a huge bill for a property I left over 6 months ago. I was paying by DD, the meters were read and I paid what was asked of me. Now they are saying the meter was faulty and I have to pay back to 2007 - what are my rights?

Hi PhilippaBenos79 - Look at the bills for this dwelling - If you have not kept them, ask the supplier for copies - and check as to whether or not the the End Readings on the bills were "Estimated", these will have either Estimated or the letter E alongside them, or were they "Actual" with a letter A.
Athough you paid your D/Debits, it's very possible that with Estimated readings you were using more power than your D/D's were paying for, although when you advised your moveing-out meter reading, this should set the record straight and your Final Bill is adjusted accordingly
If this demand you have had is not detailed with the Meter readings, then ask for one that is - It has to be supplied - Do your own homework and check the bills, if you don't agree write to the supplier with your figures
If you do not act quickly, the supplier will put the matter into the hands of a Debt Collection Agency and it can spiral up to the point of Court proceedings and a black mark on your credit file0 -
I dont think most of this is relevant as the original post says meter was read but has now been found to be faulty.Hi PhilippaBenos79 - Look at the bills for this dwelling - If you have not kept them, ask the supplier for copies - and check as to whether or not the the End Readings on the bills were "Estimated", these will have either Estimated or the letter E alongside them, or were they "Actual" with a letter A.

If the meter was recording, but incorrectly, I think they will have trouble claiming back before the fault was reported (by customer or supplier agent).
I do agree that you should ask for a detailed bill that clearly shows what readings were used on the bills you have already paid and how they have determine the new readings/bill.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
