I'm hoping to get to the point of having 12 months expenses in savings over the next couple of years. I currently have just over 5 months saved up, so I'm getting there slowly.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

I would suggest that it's highly dangerous to rely on the benefits system. For how long could you live on £65 a week?
When I was previously employed I found the benefit of £65 (it was less) was out weighed by the time spent messing around signing on and off to claim it verses being able to do contract work and the morality of cash in hands whilst on the dole.
So I didn't bother with it. Was only out 2 months however and working for at least one of those off the books before finding a more permanent gig.0
