That's almost certainly a SATA power connector. The 8-pin (sorry, 7 - I never was much good at counting beyond 3) data connector should be next to it:0

I've just extracted the hdd. It has a line of 15-ish pins, then another line of 7. Neither 40 or 8.??????
If it looks like this:
it is SATA. Handily, the SATA interface on laptop hard drives is exactly the same as desktop ones so you can pop the drive in a SATA equipped desktop and get access to the drive and data on it.0 -
Yes it is the one in the photos. I'll certainly have a look at the desktop I have up stairs to see if it is SATA equipped.
