Switching and tarrifs for storage heating in elect-only flat

Hi all,

We have an electricity-only flat in which there used to be storage heaters.

These were removed by the vendor before we bought but the spurs remain.

We're getting in an electrician to fit new heaters and I wondered if anyone has experience of this alongside switching electricity suppliers.

We're with eon now but think that Scottish Power will be best economy 7 supplier for us. Should we switch before we get the heaters fitted (i.e. get eon to change the meter) or switch first then install the heaters (i.e. get SP to change the meter)?

Any advice welcome! Thanks!

    Hi catkins79 - The vendor removed the Storage heaters ? ! ! ?
The first question is why, (Does this flat have a severe wiring fault), and the second question is that working or not, Storage heaters are an integral fixture and part of the buildings fabric that is passed along from owner to owner

However, at this moment you are on a deemed ECO7 contract with EON and you can Switch whenever you like, but to Switch successfully you need a full years consumption history for the Switch sites to compare - which you don't have - So enter a guess figure of 12000Kwh a year with say 3000 used at DAY RATE and 9000 at NIGHT RATE and get onto a Direct Debit/Online billing tariff - Eons discount for this is pretty good

Whilst your sparks is at work, have him install 13amp sockets on the Storage radiator circuit so you can run a Wash m/c, dishwasher or Tumble dryer overnight - Some flat management contracts forbid this due to noise, so have a look at yours

mmm, don't think you are meant to do that, :naughty: and anyway no need to as on E7 the whole house switches on to cheap rate at the preset times.

    Hi catkins

We charge £50 for non-essential meter changes. Not sure about other suppliers but I think some do this without charging. You might want to check this out before making a decision.

Hope this is useful catkins. Give me a shout if I can help further as will be glad to do so.

Not sure the OP needs any meter change. I think they currently have a dual rate (E7) meter.

OP - any switch of supplier can be done independently of the timing to replace the missing heaters. It's exactly the same stuff that comes through the same wires; it's just you'll be billed by a different company for it. Anyway, it'll take 4-6 weeks to complete any supplier switch ;)

Not quite true, storage heaters are not regarded as an integral fixture. Bourne out by the fact that storeage heaters are not taken into account when arriving at the rateable value of a property, whereas wet heating syatems are.

And some people do take their heaters with them. The manufactures certainly used to give this as a selling point.
