How do you tell when a green tomato is ripe?

I don't know why I've only just thought of this. I'm growing green zebra tomatoes this year, and now that the red tomatoes are ripening, I'm wondering how you can tell when a green tomato is ready to eat. I'm thinking try one every week until I like the taste - but there might not be any left at that rate...

Wikipedia has a picture of a ripe one:

It seems they should be yellow/orangey and green

Tomatoes are also softer when pressed whilst ripe.

If they come away from the plant with a gentle tug i presume they are ready.

If they dont i leave them a bit longer.

Thanks for all the help. Sadly, that means they're not ready yet.

Sorry, I had to chuckle at this, it reminded me of a Jersey Tomato Grower I knew who was colour blind :rotfl:
Interesting though, might have to try them next year - let us know how they taste :)

Just to let you know I'm not impressed by the green zebras. Most still not ripened, even in the greenhouse. Insipid taste, and the colour is all wrong in the pan and on the plate. Back to reds and yellows for me.
