To be honest, I don't expect any toiletries in the rooms (unless I've been in those hotels before) - so when I do get them I'm pleasantly surprised :).

I don't expect any, I very rarely use them and I never take them home with me. I guess I'm unusual.

She actually supported a charity for muscians in Cuba (don't ask me why!!) so I suppose what she saved in presents enabled her to donate to this charity.

    Hmmn ...
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Upmarket Hotel we stayed in in Bangkok re-filled the same bottles for the week we were there. (Marked the bottom with a pen just to see). I thought it was a good idea but my friend was horrified, she wanted new everytime.
I always take them and use them when we travel in the campervan.:D

Tbh , there are probably loads more things involved in a hotel stay that have a greater environmental impact , especially if it involves travel

Of course I am aware of that, but I felt it was unnecessary to mention a travellers carbon footprint travelling around the world on a 747 when the thread is related to little bottles of shampoo supplied at a hotel.

That debate is for somewhere else.

I usually prefer my own shampoo and shower gel, but I will occasionally use the ones provided.

The best toiletries I've come across were L'Occitane and Bvlgari at the Four Season in Vegas. The maid left me loads after I left at good tip before they did turn down service.

Thanks again for the imput everyone- it really is interesting and gives you an understanding of how different people can be. As a family we have gone from camping in a tent to staying in nice hotels- not quite 5* just yet but we have time (we hope!!). We are amazed when we find stuff in a hotel such as shampoo and soap, along with slippers, sewing kit and we have even had shoe shine!!!

It is nice to be pampered and we always try to be kind to the environment by only using what we need!! Plus we place towels back on the rack to dry and re-use!!

Even if they're there, I tend not to use them anyway - I have sensitive skin, and I have a sneaking suspicion that however pretty the bottle the stuff inside it is bought on mass and on the cheap, even in the posher hotels.
The only thing I'd consider essential is soap or handwash, everything else I take with me, but I don't want to waste my nice shower gel on washing my hands every time I use the loo!
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I hope this is not too strange a question and I will be posting it on another board as well to try to get an idea from everyone.

When you stay in a hotel, either on business for an overnight stop or for a few days or more, what do you expect to have the hotel supply with regards to toiletries?

For example when we have stayed at some hotels, in the bathroom you have "mini shampoo, shower gel and soap" whilst in others you have a "mini pack". These normally consist of mini shampoo, gel, soap, slippers, toothbrush/paste, shoe shine and sometimes razor kit?

I have often wondered if all this is a waste or needed and would be intrigued to see if others feel the same or if you feel it should be standard in all hotels and guest houses?

The 'mini pack' that you describe I wouldn't expect unless I was in a Deluxe room in a 4/5star.

3/4 star often have the soap/shampoo dispensers on the wall where you use what you need. Standard rooms in a 4/5 star I would expect soap, shower gel, shampoo, shower cap. Oftentimes there will be moisturiser, emery board, shoe shine wipe, etc. too.

I like the wooden pencil-style pens that they have in the UK Hiltons. :)
  • I wouldn't expect toiletries in a Travelodge type hotel, but I love them in the hotels I've stayed in when in the States. So long as there is some shampoo and shower gel I'm happy. I'd love it if the hotels supplied one of those shower 'puffs' that you could just throw away at the end of the stay. I always buy a new one to take with me then chuck it so it doesn't end up soaking anything.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

I know of just a hotel - just be careful bending down for the soap!
