Hotel Toiletries- What Do You Expect?

I hope this is not too strange a question and I will be posting it on the overseas board as well to try to get an idea from everyone.
When you stay in a hotel, either on business for an overnight stop or for a few days or more, what do you expect to have the hotel supply with regards to toiletries?
For example when we have stayed at some hotels, in the bathroom you have "mini shampoo, shower gel and soap" whilst in others you have a "mini pack". These normally consist of mini shampoo, gel, soap, slippers, toothbrush/paste, shoe shine and sometimes razor kit?
I have often wondered if all this is a waste or needed and would be intrigued to see if others feel the same or if you feel it should be standard in all hotels and guest houses?

For me body/hair wash, conditioner and soap are a must. And on a recent trip to London a mini toothpaste/toothbrush pack would have come in very handy would have saved me £2.50 at the Mal Maison :eek:0 -
It can depend on the star rating of the hotel, especially in the UK. If it's a reasonably cheap/someone doing the minimum to get whatever rating they're after I'd expect soap, shampoo and body wash. If it was a bit further up the rating I'd expect a bathrobe and the other things mentioned like a shaving kit, or fancier brand toiletries like Molton Brown.0

At the absolute minimum - a bar of soap. Stayed in some places in the USA where it didn't even have that, and it just felt so grubby.
I don't mind so much the travelodge/premier inn dispensers of shampoo/bodywash on the walls as that reduces waste, and it helps them keep the margins down.
If I was staying somewhere that cost a fair bit I'd expect premium quality shampoo/shower gel and soap. With complimentary access to emergency supplies such as sewing kits/toothbrushes ( I don't necessarily expect them in the room, but I want to be able to ring housekeeping for them if I have an emergency)0 -
I don't expect anything beyond soap to wash my hands with - I always take my own wash stuff. Any extras are a bonus, though access to emergency supplies like a sewing kit (not necessarily a toothbrush though) at reception etc is welcome too."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0

Thanks everyone for the replies. I posted in the overseas section and got some interesting replies also. Like I mentioned on the other thread it is amazing how different people can be.0

As a general rule for me the more it costs and the more stars the more I expect
I take my own toiletries anyway so dont use most hotel ones but for basic hotel like travelodge etc I only think soap is a must-have. 3-4 stars I like to see soap, shampoo, body wash, and for anything higher like 5 star or some or the larger hotel chains I would expect shower cap, and fancier soap/shampoo etc. Paying £30 a night you cant expect too much whereas paying £120+ a night you expect more as even if you wont use them you just expect a bit more luxury the more you pay. Some People Live & Learn, Some People Just Live...0 -
I really not bothered what hotels supply, I much prefer to use my own personal toiletries etc, & usually leave theirs untouched even if they're top notch ...
we-e-ell, maybe I'd use/take them if they were L'Occitane or something of that ilk0 -
I don't use them anyway! I take my own things. It's called Personal Hygeine for a reason. Everything you use is personal to yourself. It wouldn't be so bad if they provided you with known-brands.0

Apart from something to wash your hands with I wish hotels would not include toiletries but made them available on request for a charge.
Firstly I would rather they kept the cost down as I usually bring my own, and I don't see why I should pay for those that hoover up everything that is provided every day (like my MIL who now has dozens of sample bottles). Secondly cheap hotel toiletries are horrible (you should see the wholesale prices, scarily cheap), I would rather pay a little more and get decent stuff provided if I'm having it at all.0 -
I always take my own. If I'm going for a luxury weekend I want MY luxury! I want to smell of my stuff, not something everyone else smells of.******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0
