4 weeks notice needed when you die?

My Mother who was 87 years old passed away on Saturday. She lived in a flat that was suitable for her disabilities but not sheltered accommodation. We have cleared and cleaned the flat and it is now ready to re-let. The landlords, BHPA, have now said that they require 4 weeks notice and therefore 4 weeks rent from the estate. Because of her age and disabilities her rent was paid through the housing benefits office, the benefits stopped from the date of her death. BHPA say the 4 weeks rent will have to be paid from the estate, but the only money in the estate was to pay for the funeral. Does anyone have any advice as this just seems so unreasonable and unfair.

Don't pay them.
Who is executor? They should deal with this.
Was there a will?
Funeral comes first anyway.
Check for the funeral allowance benifits.

There should be a guide from the registrar as well
Also there are some services to help even when you know it is coming it can be hard to deal with.0 -

just tell them there is no money left, and they will have to chase it up with benefits, they cant really take your mother to court and make her pay, and by no means are you responsible to pay as you never signed the tenancy.
sorry to hear about your bad news and i hope everything gets sorted, but if theres no money left from the estate theres no way they will get 4 weeks rent.0 -
Sorry for your loss...
The estate is that of your mother. If there is nothing left after reasonable funeral expenses are paid then as far as I am aware they simply don't get paid.
There should be an executor who will deal with this sort of thing and apply for probate. If there are other bills such as telephone line, gas and electric or council tax these will also have to come from the estate.0 -

Been there and done that, with my mum passing last year.
Just ignore morons like this who are ‘following procedures’ without engaging their brains.
All the idiots like this connected with my mother’s estate soon lost interest, and not a single one pursued their threats.
I hope you’re coping alright. This is NOT what you need at this time.0 -

These "morons" are just trying to collect rent due. For most providers of social housing, rent id their only/primary source of income and will fund just about everything they do, from new builds, to improvements and repairs. Just remember that next time you have to call on their services.0
