Hi
I have had plans drawn up for a extension and I have been looking at the drawing for the roof and fancy the idea of a Vaulted ceiling. The original drawing just show a standard truss but has a Velux window on the plan and I can't see the benefit unless the ceiling is vaulted (I think this means high ceiling)
The style of roof is hip and i am not sure if I need to speak to the architect or building control or a trusses designer\maker?
any ideas?
thanks

The ceiling joists act as ties to brace the roof rafters and stabilise the walls. So if you don't want ceiling joists, then the roof will have to be properly designed (structural engineer) in terms of loading and supports - typically requiring beams or purlins in certain places. A bit difficult for hipped roofs, so more design/costs will be involved
The insulation type/method may also need to be altered to that on the original plans0 -

Should i then speak to the guys at my local council - building control?0 -
The velux would probably be "boxed in" so it would still be of benefit.
Ians reply seems to suggest using rafters & supporting purlins etc. Alternatively you could go for scissor trusses. Or if you wanted sloping ceiling up to a certain point and then horizontal ceiling, go for raised tie trusses.0 -

No. Building control check work and don't design it for you.
By all means tell them that you are changing the plans, but they will just ask you to supply details of the roof design along with structural calculations to prove that it will all stay up0 -
