Am I correct in thinking that like council tax, students don't need to pay NI until they leave uni?
I did 2 weeks of intensive work in July to earn some cash instead of taking a holiday. For the first time in my earnings, over £100 has been taken out of my wages for NI. Can anyone tell my why?

            Hi
I am a student just left school and starting at Leeds uni next week. If you earn over the threshold then you have to pay NI. I think it is set at £94 per week. During the summer i have earnt over this and NI has been taken from my wages. Please someone correct me if i am wrong but i belive that this is correct.0 -
i think you have to pay it.
here's a sheet from the NUS on all things tax and NI - it's actually pretty useful!

If you're a student and work a certain number of hours a week then NI has to paid, it's not much. Because you had a job over the summer you will have earned above the amount, you cannot claim it back. Income tax on the other hand can be claimed back if you haven't earned over £4895 in the tax year (does take some time to get it back though).0

"If you are under the age of 65 your personal allowance for the 2006-07 tax year is £5,035."
But you're right (as are others) about the NI - there isn't a yearly limit, it is assessed monthly or weekly depending on how regularly you're paid.
And grade15 is right too, being a student doesn't get you out of paying tax or NI if you're liable to do so! Good preparation for post-student life, if you ask me ...

NI is generally assessed on a weekly basis, if you earn over £97 a week, you need to pay it - theres no student exemption, nor are you credited with it (except under the normal rules that apply to everyone)I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
