End of tenancy agreement

I rented a property on a 12 month AST agreement, which is due to end in October. I'm keen to know what happens after this, I asked the agents and they said that the LL would agree to a 6 month renewal.
Is this 6 month renewal a normal thing?
I'd rather have a longer period and not have to worry about having to move out if the LL wanted to sell or whatever...
What usually happens at the end of the rental period stated on the contract of an AST?
Thanks

Two things can happen : If you stay beyond the end of the contract, the tenancy becomes a statutory periodic tenancy. This entitles you to give one month notice to quit at any time, and the landlord 2 months. Or you sign a new contract, for however long. The reason that they are offering a 6month contract is possibly because the LA is after more fees, so discuss it with your landlord before going ahead.0
