Insurer's not taken 18 months direct debit and wants a lump sum!

Aviva has admitted to a technical fault which meant that they did not take motor insurance direct debits from me for a period of sixteen months. They now want the lot in a lump sum! I'm tempted to say that they've lost a year's payments but that I'm prepared to start again from June. What are my rights?

So you didn't notice you had more money than you should have each month?

How about you take responsibility and pay for the period you have been insured for?

As above, some of the blame lies with you for not sufficiently managing your accounts, otherwise you would have 16 months premiums just sitting in your account.

That being said, you have to pay and are in no position to defend yourself (doing so could incur extra costs).

Id get onto them and say your willing to pay but negotiate a repayment plan highlighting their major role in the error.

They have 6 years in which to chase you for any funds owed.

As previously said, are you saying you honestly didnt notice? They were providing you with a service.

End of the day, none of us really like paying insurance but you pay it for peace of mind.

no, you pay it because its the LAW.

Only law to have certain types of insurance and in certain conditions.

If i dont have a car, its not against the law for me not to have insurance.

Anyways, if it is the "LAW" wouldnt non-payment get you into criminal courts rather than civil proceedings for debt recovery? Hmmm

I was specifically refering to car insurance, as this thread is about car insurance.

Yes but you didnt state you were referring to car insurance, just insurance. Its law to have the insurance though...........doesnt say anything about payment - although non-payment would mean your policy would be cancelled (in most cases) and you'd be driving without insurance.

Anyways, plenty of people are caught without insurance - which just raise the premium for people who do pay it. It amazes me how little punishment they get for this. Same for those who drive without a valid licence.

totally agree, people get fined £300 for not having insurance... how long have they not had insurance for?? a couple of years, so they have actually saved money! ( eg insurance is £400 per year)

People think "oh if i were in a accident i'd scrap the car/pay for repairs" but they dont realise insurance would pay out damages which could run to tens of thousands or more - depending on the severity.

Getting a little bit off topic - my fault i'm afraid!
