My daughter is going to be a penniless student living in York. We would like any suggestions from anyone living or working in York as to what activities there are in York to do which are free or cheap. I am hoping to compile her a list that might keep her from living in the pub
Any local knowlege is much appreciated for instance which areas of the city to avoid after dark/weekends, cheap places to eat or avoid etc.

If you go to the tourist infomation they sell a leaflet that is like a treasure hunt that directs you on a tour of the sights of york whilst asking you to answer questions it's a great cheap day out (and it does take all day).0

Once she is living in York she can apply for a YORKcard
http://www.york.gov.uk/leisure/yorkcard.html
which will get her into some places free (Castle museum and Yorkshire museum both free and great - good for a few visits each) I believe you can get into the Minster free with this card too...
The National Railway Museum is also free
The city is pretty safe really, though can be boisterous on weekend nights - if she is living on campus there are some alleyways to be avoided, but she can get advice on that from the student union
Foodwise - Mazimaz on Micklegate is great for cheap bangers and mash, Mr £andwich in the Shambles does fresh sandwiches for £1, lots of places do cheaper deals if you eat early, but campus food is pretty good and reasonable
Hope this helps - she'll have a great time

Excellent, this is exactly the sort of local knowledge she needs. She has had a letter from her letting agent so i hope this counts as proof of residense.
Just wondering about these dangerous alleyways now. She has managed to get a pub job and her two shrfts are Sunday afternoon and Saturday evening until 12.30. she is working up by the art gallery. I think she just wants straight along Gillygate so I think that is fairly safe.

York's a pretty safe place.
And as for keeping her out of the pubs...common, she's a student and York has one of the greatest selection of pubs in the country!
I'm surprised she's living off-campus. In my day everyone was guaranteed accommodation on campus in the 1st year, which is best because you make the social connections. Guess things must have changed with the expansion over the years - or is it St Johns rather than "Univerisity of"?I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -
Gillygate area is usually fine. Am also curious that she is off-campus... how come?
Let me know if I can help with anything else - I live in York currently so if you need anything finding out I should be able to do it.

Yes she is off campus. She applied late and only got in through clearing. Then she went to an open day late in August. and was told there would be no halls of residence place and she was 42nd on the waiting list for a room. So as a temp measure she arranged to lodge with someone she knew from Harrogate and commute in.
But she went to the viewing weekend and found a room in a student house, nice big house six girls - I dont know wether the same happened to them, no room at the inn because all but one are also first year.
I dont know wether she is missing out very much on halls life, at least her social life is not lacking, living where they are. She actually left home in January so she has done some (assisted) fending her herself.
The student house she is in has not got the wirelss system set up yet so she has yet to discover the delights of MSE.
What I am thinking is that I know because of living/working here for years where to go in our local towns to get a cheap meals, a good brew, where students get their bargains, where not to go after dark etc so I thought someone living/studing/working in York must have similar knowledge.
