Bike combination D-lock

Hubby bought a nice new bike at the weekend and we had already bought a D-shaped combination lock made by "Destination". Followed the instructions on the back of the packaging, the default combination was 0000, so we reset it to our choice and it worked the times I tried it.

Hubby had his bike out Sunday night and unlocked it fine. Kids wanted their bikes out tonight (they are all locked together) and the combination we set wouldn't work, tried all different numbers etc, wouldn't open.

Ended up having to angle grind it off

Hubby locked up the bike the last time, so don't whether he did something and the number got changed. Am not happy. Have just bought another lock the same as well, as we were happy with it, but can't return it as the packaging has been opened.

So hubby is going to buy another lock but one with a key this time.

Sounds like someone found the combination and changed it....

It only takes about 30 minutes to run through every possible combination of a 3 number combination lock......... I was a swine for doing this at school.

Don't use one on a bike, if you do then don't expect the bike to be there when you return!!

Might I suggest purchasing an ABUS Granit bike lock, they are the toughest bike locks on the market.
The steel cable locks have interlinked steel shackles around the cable to prevent them being cut, I have one protecting my own mountain bike (worth over £1200 new).

But let me repeat myself, DO NOT use combination locks.

That isn't possible as the bike was in the shed for only one night. It wasn't left anywhere outside with the lock. Plus the lock wouldn't let you change the number without having the correct number first.

I think something must have happened when hubby locked it up (I didn't see him do it) and the number must have changed or something.

As the other poster said, you can run through every combination to find the numbers, very quickly. But then you can pick most padlocks in no time if you know how.

I don't trust D-Locks myself, after the Krytonite bic pen fiasco... I'll stick to an old fashioned chain and pad lock.

Thats resolved now so I wouldnt worry about buying a Kryptonite lock. It applied to all locks that allow you to use a shimmy, which is a lot of locks from a lot of manufacturers!

You will cut a chain far more easily than a good D lock, unless of course you are able to carry 10kg of chain on your bike ;-)
