Private Registration - how to transfer and get a replacement plate?

I am hoping for some information here as the DVLA site offered little help to answer my query:

My dad bought 2 private plates for his 2 cars at the time. When he sold one of his cars, he transferred one of his private plates onto my name. I have been using this on my car for a few years now. He has now gone and bought himself another car and has asked me for his plate back. What is the procedure and who pays for it all?

Thanks for the information.

If the plate was transferred to your car a few years back then the fee would have been paid for that. end of story.
For the transfer back to the original owner's car, another fee is required. Since it's between you and dad, I'd assume you decide between you who pays but I'd expect it to be him since it's his plate.

If it's been on your car less than 3 years it would have been cheaper putting the plate on a retention certificate.

Turns out my dad does not want to put it on his new car just yet but wants to keep until he is ready.

Before I give him the private plate back, I will require a replacement. Has anyone got a link for information/form on how to do this please?

    Thanks.

ISTR £105 gets it from your car to a piece of paper, it can then be transferred on to another car FOC (within a year, then a renewal fee is due if you still want to keep it on paper beyond the year).

When it comes off your car, either the DVLA will put your car back on its original number, or next available number of the same age if you original number has been reassigned (unlikely).

Or you could buy a new private plate for your car and then transfer that on (at the same time as taking the old one off or later).
