New York - black cab from JFK airport?

Hi guys,

me and my friends are flying to NY in Feb 2011. There is 5 of us.

I've heard that taxi from Airport to Manhattan can cost around $50-70, is that right? Would a taxi fit 5 of us or would we have to take 2?

At the moment the plan is to travel by train, but I am thinking if they do have something like a black cab where you can fit 5 for this price then it's not too much to pay for the little extra comfort.

You would have to get unless you booked, but I would recommend taking the train as it's actually a nice little ride (we were lucky enough to grab it as the sun was setting and the view was awesome). It's just across the road from the arrivals terminal.

    Thank you very much.
How much does it cost (roughly) and where do you buy the ticket please?

The only issue with the subway is 5 of you is going to cost $35'ish and you may not be that close to your hotel and hardly any subways have escalators and therefore you will need to lug all your bags up stairs and depending on your time of arrival, ie rush hour, you wont be welcome on the subway.

On the other hand wander outside and see the "yellow" cab dispatcher, avoid people asking if you want a cab, then jump in a cab, they are different sizes and therefore some of them have more than 5 seats in them.

The cost is $65 all in and you will get to see some scenery on the way in and be dropped to your door

The last time i was there we jumped in a yellow taxi, well it was actually a people carrier & would easily fit 5 ppl. You just go outside the terminal building to the official rank & queue up. It is a set fare to Manhattan, cant mind how much exactly & dont forget to tip the driver!!

  • Yellow cabs can hold 5 ppl - the economics of traveling in to the city by cab are definite. Two of us did it in June. The cabs have set prices and have to adhere. Ours tried to add a little extra on but in the queue you are given a ticket and told what you should pay. Definitely get to your hotel by cab, enjoy the skyline as you drive towards the city and learn your way round at leisure (without your cases!). Have a brilliant time :)

Hi, thank you for that, that is the only thing I was thinking.
We will all most likely have big suitcase and hand suitcases as we want to do some shopping while we are there. And we are not staying in a hotel, but in a rented apartment.

We arrive at 13.30 on Friday, is that a rush hour? I wouldn't think so? But if it is $65 set price and we can get 5 people into a cab then the cost for each person is £9 rougly, let's say £10 with tip so the cost is acceptable I would think...

The OP didnt state which airport they were arriving. I flew into LaGuardia & the taxi fare was more like $35 not including tip. :p
