I have inherited a computer where the hard drive is split with two ways to log in. One is an admin suer with password, the other is normal. Apparently this was done to stop people downloading things they shouldn't! But its a pain for me because you have to be logged in as admin to download anything, but most of my documents are in the other half.
Please could anyone help with an idiot's guide as to how to get them merged with just one login and no password?

The drives are not split. These are just two user accounts. I would suggest either of the following:
1. Create a folder on the C:\ and place all your documents in there. You will be able to access the documents here
2. Just user the Admin user account. You are now the owner of the machine so why use the other account? Just copy the data from your My Docs dir and keep the account there just incase there are any book marks, saved passwords etc that you have in that account and you can always go back.
3. Copy all of your user settings over to the Admin account, this will have to be done whilst logged in as a local admin.
Can you let us know why you want to continue logging in as the non Admin user? Is it just because of the data?0 -

Login as the admin account
Go to the following directory. C:\Documents and Settings\"computer username
Copy the CONTENT of the following folders ( just incase you dont want to overwrite the current admin folders
Desktop
My Documents
Recent Documents
Favorites
Copy the contents from each directory to the same named directory here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator account name
Thats probably your easiest way0 -
Hi,
Having checked again, the drives are split into C and D. The non-passworded log-in leads to (C) and is fullish and the passworded one leads to (D) and is not. I would rather not have any password because its a pain.
I don't seem to be able to copy my documents over to D. And because C is full, I can't save anymore onto it. I thought if I merged them it would help create space and improve things overall!0 -

I would actually leave it as is. It makes you much less prone to viruses. Most of the virus infections (90%+) happen because people go online with an Administrator account.
When you say that you can't "download" I think you mean that you can't install. You should be able to download anything with any user account. Just save the program you want to install and then navigate with the Windows Explorer to the file, right click on it and chose "Run as Administrator". You will be asked for the Administrator password and voilà, the software will install.0 -
Hi,
I've had a think, and will leave the drives split, and just start using the empty one.
But would like only one log-in and no password. Pointless having two becasue it just slows down the time to boot.
Please can anyone help?0 -

As you have access to the admin account then it wont matter if you delete the user account as you willl still have access to the relative directories.
Easiest way to do this without deleting data is to goto MY Computer and right click. Left click Manage. Expand Local Users & Groups and then click on users. ON the right hand pane right click the user to delete and then left click on delete.
You must do this via the admin account.0 -

As I said earlier, I would use the restricted account for your day-to-day work. You can automatically logon without the need of a password.

To use the almost empty drive for all your documents, create a new folder and then follow these instructions
