    dont think the sit down meal is a new thing, my mum and dad had one in the early 50s.

    we had 50odd for the meal and another 100 on an evening - big families and lots of friends.

    personally i would have the sit down meal and no evening buffet if you're that tight on your budget, that would make it much more conventional but i would make it clear on the evening invites that there will be no buffet. or is there no way you could have a very basic buffet on an evening? my friends wedding last year had bacon butties, chip butties, fish finger butties etc. which the venue did cheaply for them.

    could you supply your own wine? even paying corkage it will be cheaper than buying their drinks package.
