buying goods at a stated price on the item

I tried to purchase a pair of trainers for my son. On the box they had been reduced from £15 to £8. They went through the till at the more expensive price and the store would not sell me them at the lower price of £8, as they said it was a mistake. I thought as a consumer, that the shop would have to sell me the goods at the priced stated on them. Where do I stand with this one?

The price is an invitation to buy and they don't have to honour it. For example there have been people that swap labels etc to get goods cheaper. But from personal experience in tescos something was priced up wrong on they shelf and when i pointed it out that they, what i thought overcharged me as a good will gesture they sold at the price offered but they didn't have to.

    redsquarelady is spot on:

They don't have to sell you the goods for the price it states on the item, or any other price. Infact, they don't have to sell the item at all...

Mistakes happen, the only difference is when the "mistake" is done deliberately, but then it's how you prove it...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

    in your socks:D

As red square a price is just an invitation to buy,
  • If it happens in Tesco pay for the item then go back to customer services. As a customer you would expect to pay the shelf sticker price, or the price attached to it. I believe that its then them in the wrong for over charging you. It may also be down to them scanning it and not pointing out the price difference at the point of sale. (could be wrong, frequently am.....)

They can't knowingly misprice items or overcharge, I think this is the reason they are generous with the double the difference back, they dont have to do it but most people then leave happy and generally it will be small amounts.

Not like the old days when they did the refund and you kept the item!

Don't give Tesco too much praise, they probably agreed that "goodwill gesture" to avoid having to give you double the difference, which is what you are entitled to, under their own T&Cs, if you are charged a different price to that marked on the shelf or pack. They rarely offer you DTD, they keep their mouths shut in the hope that you don't know about it.

[pedantic]"Invitation to treat" is the recognised term [/pedantic]
