Postage to Republic of Ireland

Stupid postal system takes upto 7 days for items to the Republic, yet they can be in N.Ireland 24hrs later or the US 5 days later!!! A lot of grief from buyers in Éire!

Eire is Europe and Ireland is not...so the packages are handled differently.

I've never yet had problems with a buyer in Eire as most realise they have to wait and also pay extra (airmail charges) for items from the UK.

Eire and Ireland are the same place - so both are in Europe.

Every time I have a package to Ireland I get asked at the PO - North or Southern? There is no such thing as Southern Ireland! Annoys me so much, especially since the first time the lady refused to agree with me and I had to concede.

    Roayl mail site

Middle of the page right hand side ( postal prices ) , feel free to check where Eire and Northern Ireland come under postage rates / places.

You will see that Eire falls under the Eu and Northern Ireland ( comes under UK ) reguarding postage rates

  • There is Northern Ireland and there's Republic of Ireland, there is no country just called "Ireland" that's the name of the Island both countries are on. Eire is still the name of the Republic in the Irish language.

I don't think you understand his point. "Eire" was the name used for the Republic of Ireland for a brief period ending in 1948. The correct term for the place you are calling "Eire" is Ireland.

Using "Ireland" to refer to Northern Ireland" is just plain wrong. There is Ireland and Northern Ireland. And Eire and Ireland are the same thing.

    Point taken but ,

I didnt use Ireland to refer to Northern Ireland

Article 4 of the Constitution of Ireland:

We use "Republic of Ireland" to refer to Ireland only to distinguish it from the larger island of Ireland. The correct term for the Irish Republic is Ireland alone.

so Ireland is not the whole of Ireland, that doesn't make any sort of sense at all. The Republic were suposed to have dropped the claim to the north anyway or doropped it until a referendum(though I personaly think the 6 sshould belong with the 26). These man called the country the republic http://www.iol.ie/~dluby/proclaim.htm does that not count?

    And wo is "we"?

The correct name of Poland is the Republic of Poland, but I have yet to use that term. Therefore I call Ireland the country, Ireland. I have no need to talk about the island on its own. It's like saying you're going to America - this means USA, but actually you could be going anywhere on two continents.

    What was the question?
