hiding pipes under basin

Hello DIY experts.
I've a basin that's basic but functional and under it an ugly tangle of pipes and a step-like raised bit running along the wall that must be there to hide some other pipes.
I can't afford to have a new washbasin and washstand put in right now, but would love to be able to hide the pipes. I've seen 'sink skirts' online but they look horrid. Anything nicer that can be done?

hardboard is the cheapest solution. it also bends very easy, so you can make a semi circle if required.
