Browsing history doesn't save

Options
Have had a problem with my pc recently where it will not save browser history. It is not a browser problem as it is happening in both google chrome and internet explorer. I do not have the clear browser history box checked on either of them. I thought it was down to kaspersky because it started happening around about the time I installed that, but having contacted them they suggested uninstalling and reinstalling kasp and in between the two trying to see if the history would save - it didn't.

This is a bit of a nuisance as it means that ticking "remember me" boxes doesn't work. Can anyone suggest why this suddenly started happening please?

Many thanks in advance for any help.

do you mean browser history or passwords, you could try, for IE, internet options > content > auto complete > settings, see what's ticked there, I have everything ticked except feeds and forms.

    Sorry, don't know about chrome.

"Remember me" boxes on logins rely on cookies not on history - check your settings for them.

There is a box you can tick on google chrome to clear cookies when closing browser, but this is not ticked. I cannot find such an option in IE.

The reason I figure it is something to do with history is the fact that, if your web browser cannot detect that you have visited the site before, it stands to reason that it can't apply the cookie to enable the "remember me". The problem I have coincided with both google chrome and internet explorer not remembering history. In internet explorer I have set it to remember history for the past week, but it clears history every time I close the browser. In google chrome there doesn't appear to be an option to choose this.

I am convinced that if I can get these browsers to remember history, my problem will be solved. Can anyone help please?

You have checked that the box

    Delete Browsing History on Exit

    is not ticked?
  • If it is happening cross browser there is likely to be a piece of software installed that is clearing it.

Does anyone else have access to the PC that could have installed something of this nature? Have a look in the start menu for anything that sounds suspicious.

Do you use CCleaner? Is it set to run on startup? That would automatically delete browser history.

Yes I do! Thank you so much, that must be it.:T Is there a way to configure CCleaner to run without clearing history please, or do I just have to disable it running on startup and try to remember to run it manually on a regular basis?
