Debenhams Wedding List Service

Happy occasion someone getting married has their wedding list at Debenhams. I dutifully went on line and ordered a number of things off the wedding list. Since some of the items were on sale I thought I'd get a few extra items.

Some weeks later I get posted a receipt saying "sorry none of the items selected was in stock, but we have selected something else for you" Lo and behold none of the selected items are what I would have selected. Now just bad luck, maybe but of the 5 items I selected none were in stock! This is also the second time that I have ordered something from a Debenham wedding list and found out weeks later that nothing was in stock.

Now Debebhams may say that these items were picked some time ago and stock changes. But when I placed my order I checked that everything was available to order from the main Debenhams site. It seems it only has to be out of stock at the store where the wedding list was held. This time I think the substitute items cost slightly more than I intended to spend which is another source of irritation. I shall have to find my online receipt to check.

Somewhere in the small print it says you agreed to gift substitution, but since I don't recall opt in to this, I have to take their word for it.

Lesson learned, I'll just give the money to the happy couple and let them decide what to substitute and save myself the £3.50 handling charge!

That's really distressing actually, especially when you've taken the time to pick out what YOU want to give off the gift list. I guess if they were in the sale, then they were end of line perhaps? But you should have been notified that this scenario was possibly going to happen?

John Lewis aren't that much better TBH. I generally stick to vouchers off gift lists (at least they can't mess that up can they?).

I realise that in the event of the item not being available then they may have to substitute items but I think that with a wedding list they should contact you before hand to check that the items that they have substituted are what you would want to get and the right amount too - either that or contact you by email and ask you to rechoose items!

We recently bought from a Debenhams wedding list and went into our local store to actually buy the goods. We had printed off the list from a machine in the store and the barcode on that was scanned so the items came off the list. We could have had them delivered even from buying in store but chose to spend more on the present and take them to the wedding. That way, we knew what we wanted to buy was in stock as there was a time that the couple were simply sent the value of people's choices by way of vouchers to spend in the store afterwards and I thought that was a cheek so wanted to make sure they did get the gifts we intended.

I bought off a Next list and wasn;t allowed to have delivery to the couple - I had to pay £3.50 delivery to myself, wrap it and take it with me!! What's the point of a list then? Useless.
