painting fire surround?

I really want to paint my wood fire surround, it doesn't look nice with my new wallpaper, the wood isn't a very nice colour! Has anybody done this before and does it look ok? I'm just wondering what paint to use, just thinking if the fire is on, will top (where the heat rises up)get too hot and discolour?? thanks in advance and sorry if its a stupid question!!
