I bought a Dell Inspiron about 3 years ago and I normally use it for internet, e-mail, downloading/editing pics and occasionally watching iPlayer.
The past month or so it has been really slow when I'm on the internet and it's like having dial up connection. What should I do to make it a bit faster please?

Disable iPlayer from starting with windows, it nicks your bandwidth by uploading any programs you've completely downloaded to other users.
also: (assuming you have Vista installed) go to Start menu, type 'run' in the search programs window, and open the 'Run..' that you find. In the text box there, type msconfig and hit enter - this opens the system configuration utility.
Click on Startup tab, and scroll down the list, unticking any program named that you don't need to start with windows (i.e., Adobe, Itunes, MSN, Quicktime)IT Field Service Engineer, 20 years with screwdriver and hammer0 -
Download, install, update and run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes' AntiMalware. When complete, choose 'Remove Selected' if there is anything to remove and Reboot your computer.
After restart, open the program again and go to 'Logs'. Double click on the log produced for today and post the contents here.
Next, download, install and run the HijackThis Version 2.0.3 installer and use the Quick Start guide to enable you to produce a log for posting here too.0 -
Is it only slow on the net (i.e. is it still OK when doing things offline)? If so what speed is your broadband running at?

Sounds like an issue with your ISP if you've no malware on your computer.
Go with Donnie's suggestion first and see if anything comes up. Let us know.Friendly greeting!0 -
Many thanks for all your suggestions so far. I'll let you know.0

Clean all the crud out of the fan. May need to disassemble to do it.0
