Hi,
Borrowing Mother in Laws car to drive to france for holiday and car comes out out £100 on aviva short term car insurance . Does this cover me to drive in france on 3rd party basis ? They seem to do an extension for comp cover in europe at a premium is that worth it.
Thanks

Suggest you phone them up and ask them to confirm the cover you will have in writing and ask about increasing the cover to include the vehicle.
Depends on the value of the vehicle and whether you can deal with the hassle if you are involved in an accident and the car is written off. Language issues, different culture for repairs etc.
Personally I would play safe and pay the extra for peace of mind rather than be left stranded - at least that way you can get insurers to deal with any claims.0 -
Struggling as a lot of these companies dont have phone numbers and dont respond to email.
Looking at I think that you do get 3rd party cover in france with policy but can extend it to include comp cover in europe not sure though ,0 -

Your m-i-l would have to take out the policy naming you as the driver.
The policy includes just the legal minimum third party cover for driving in France, so if you damage it/write it off, who would pay for it?
(You can extend the cover to fully comp)
Your m-i-l may get the cover cheaper by adding you as a temp. named driver on her own policy.
The advantage of having the separate temp policy is that should you need to claim it won't affect her NCD, whereas if you are on her policy any claim would hit her NCD.0 -
I would definitely say fully comp is worth it, especially if you are borrowing someon else's car.
Remeber you will be driving on the wrong side of the road, possibly be unable to converse with witnesses and dealing with a foreign legal system.
I always look at these expenses as a cost of the holiday.0
