Hi
Me and my husband are planning a trip to New York in November for 1 weekand am looking for reasonably priced accomodation. So far I have been really disappointed with whats on offer[we can spend up to £900 in total for the week. We want to ideally be near Times Square[ but are open to suggestions . Look forward to any help.

Look at post 108 in this thread

Avoid the first weekend it's the New York Marathon.(5th Nov)

Thanksgiving is the 23rd Nov (Thursday)may be best to avoid that!

Better chance (maybe) of 13th-19th Nov.

I'd recommend doing a search on venere.com - really helpful website with lots of good maps/reviews, and reasonable prices too (which you also don't have to pay in advance!)
Plus for 4% off, use code: BK5HX8W

    Hope that helps

Have you tried expedia, I booked a 3 star for 4 nights for £392 just of broadway for march next year (Washington jefferson hotel).
  • we have justed booked an apartment at the hotel beacon for $165 a night(plus taxes). it has good reviews on tripadviser.com and that is one site i would definitely check out before booking any accommodation.

let us know what you go for !!
  • You may need to slightly adjust your budget or stay one night less than you had planned.

You could book something that you can cancel with no charge - eg the Washington Jefferson another op mentioned would cost aroudn $2247 inc taxes for the week of 11/11 - 18/11. This is a good location and the hotel has good enough ratings except for the rooms being on the very small side. You can then cancel this with no charge up until the day before you are due to check in.

You could try priceline - you may need to split your days though. Blindman might come back with further info on this. Try looking on Hotwire.com too - again try splitting the days. There is info about this on www.betterbidding.com

I had a look on Orbitz for the 11/11 - 18/11 and the Ramada New Yorker comes up at an average of $219 for the week. (Check other websites though for prices and reviews). This price probably doesnt include taxes though. From what I remember some of the reviews said that the decor was a bit tired but some of the views from the higher floors were great.

www.Easyclicktravel.com has Sohotel for $188 per night - as you are staying for more than a few days not necessary for midtown location. The Helmsley costs $290 per night. They also have various Off the Record hotels but I cannot begin to identify these. They have a 3.5* in a midtown location which seems ok for $260.

If you are looking for something altogether cheaper than these then have a look on tripadvisor - there are a few hostel/b&Bs that have really good reviews and prices for half of what I am quoting above. When I tried to book they either had minimum stay too long for what I needed or were booked up. If you want a private bath, check that the hotel has one (obviously not if you are staying in a 3* or 4*).

You could try Chelsea, or Greenwich VIllage - you might find something querky and cheap. (as opposed to grotty and not very cheap). There are some rent-a-loft schemes that might work out more economical - just make sure they are in a decent area and not next to a housing project (see footnote on Woogoo).

Alternatively you could base yourself outside of Manhatten - or do 4 days in Manhatten, 3 days elsewhere.

A friend of mine stayed in the Pickwick Arms some years ago when he was in NY for a week. He didnt have a problem with the place - but he is by nature a budget traveller. It all depends on expectations. Pickwick Arms is coming out as £721 on expedia/ £997 with a private bathroom (but check the reviews on tripadvisor - although he recommended to me I decided to book elsewhere!). They have the Helmesley Midtown for £1189 inc breakfast.

Quidco does 5% cashback with Expedia so if prices are the same - be aware though that they often charge for cancellations.

    nb

Avoid any Woogoo - or apartments/aparthotels on upper westside - or at least check the reviews as there have been some issues lately with these. See trip advisor. I was tempted by the Lincoln Centre Apartments (no longer listed as Woogoo property on expedia but still showing at a very tempting price) until I did my research.
