Question re car Cat D write off

Hi, Have just been told that my old Honda is being written off as a Category D, following my being hit in the rear.
Been offered £500 which I feel is fair considering the age and condition of the car pre accident. I am probably going to buy back the car as I really need a car for work and it passed an MOT whilst waiting for the repair so am not concerned about it's safety.
The engineer has said that the salvage value is 35% of the offer price - is this the usual amount does anyone know? Seems a bit high to me.
Secondly, the car was taken a fair few miles away to a garage that my insurance pretty much insisted on, so can I ask that it is returned to me at the Third Party's expense, as it would cost me a considerable amount in fares or petrol to get there to pick it up.
Third Party haven't admitted liability yet, but my insurers are confident they will!!!!!
Thanks for any help.

You will have to get the vehicle checked by the DVLA to get it back on the road which will be another £41 - just something to concider

    Ignore this advice.

(No need to get this at all.)

35% salvage value for a £500 car seems A LOT in my opinion

It sounds about right to me especially if it's a large car

It's a 1997 Civic 1.5, so nothing very exciting. Insurers want the V5 and old MOT. No probs with getting a new MOT, but not sure why they want V5.
Would that mean I need to get a new one?

They may just want these docs to prove your ownership and that it had a current MOT.

Before sending them in, ask them why they want them, pointing out you are keeping the car, and this is being reflected in the settlement figure, and will copies do. If not will they return them after inspection.

Thank you. Just shelled out £120 for MOT including new tyre and service, but that's life I guess.
Picking it up tomorrow. Won't bother getting it repaired. Will look out for another car whilst making the most of this one.
