  • After my 7th Nov post in this thread, I got a decision letter back from the FOS last week. This time my case was assessed by an ombudsman rather than an adjudicator, and I've been offered an extra £100 taking the grand total up to £440. This contradicts all the advice on the FOS website where they quote examples of "Mrs X being awarded £300 because a direct debt wasn't taken". I've been offered a token sum to cover all 10 of my complaints against RBS. I've repeatedly asked them why they won't award a separate payment for each complaint the FOS uphold, but they just ignore the question.
They've failed to address a couple of points, ignored written evidence, and have brushed another couple of complaints aside, noting in one instance that "RBS has not responded in detail". (And the FOS are happy to let them away with this!) My favourite is the one where RBS took someone else's standing order from my business account, admitted the error, then took over 3 months to repay me. This left us £600 out of pocket and ruined a summer holiday as we had barely any spending money. The FOS reckon that these funds were not specifically earmarked for that purpose, making it hard to prove any financial loss, then question why we didn't just use a credit card instead!
it's quite clear that the FOS are a waste of time. They don't care and have no authority over the banks. They seem to read the first paragraph of a letter, send a standard reply offering peanuts in compensation and hope that you'll !!!!!! off and stop moaning. The banks love it, as they're getting away with murder.
Don't waste your time with the FOS folks, if the bank treat you badly you'd be better off just accepting it and getting on with your life.
