Is anything cheaper than EBICO?

Hi, this is my first post! I've been lurking for a while but I finally got a question.

On comparing prices on the usual sites (energyhelpline, uswitch etc), in view of EBICO's price rise wef 01.09.06, I keep being told that British Gas or Atlantic are the cheapest. However, when I look at the price per KWH, EBICO is still cheapest at:

electric: £9.68 (norweb area)
gas: £2.55

Does this seem the cheapest to everyone, bearing in mind that these prices are the new, higher ones from 01.09.06?

I hope you don't think I'm being lazy by asking you this, as I have already been on the comparison sites, honest!

  • Seems very expensive to me...

    I think you'll find the prices are 100 times less than you quote.

    Electric = 9.68p/kWh

    Gas = 2.55p/kWh
  • You also need to consider your payment method. If you pay by direct debit with Atlantic and BG you will get access to other discounts. If you use enough energy to overcome the dual tariff system in conjunction with the discounts there may be better off with the other companies. Ebico do not offer discounts for payment method.

    If you prefer only being charged for what you use then Ebico are quite competative.

    If you think you may change again, bear in mind that you are usually required to maintain the contract for 12 months to get the full benefit of the discount*. I think the Atlantic one acutally gets paid in the 13 month of the contract. I am sure someone has the exact details.

    *You normally get some discount applied quarterly with many suppliers, but if you basis your decision to switch on your annual usage, you need to stay for the 12 months for all the discounts to be applied.

  • I think it all depends on how much you use. Ebico is the cheapest gas supplier for me because I'm single and don't use much gas. Bigger family users may find Ebico less competitive.

    The big surprise to me is that British Gas click energy is the next cheapest. Who'd have thought it - British Gas nearly the cheapest for gas!
  • Thanks for the advice.

    Yes I did mean pence! Thank God! Or I'd have been VERY cold this winter!

    Think I'll stick with EBICO then, as I don't use a massive amount of energy as my house is quite small and we do our best to be frugal.

    Been with them for a few months now and very happy and would recommend. Can check on-line at any time with them throu southern electric website. If you are a lowish user then they must be the cheapest. I get a small discount for paying by monthly dd. Not sure if this is a regional thing maybe?

    You have not taken into account that Ebico have no standing charge OR higher tier of prices. Not having a standing charge usually outweighs the DD and dual fuel discounts the others give.

    You're not really getting a DD discount, as explained at the Ebico website:

    My bill says that I’m getting a discount for paying by Direct Debit – but I thought the whole point was that everyone paid the same on EQUIGAS and EQUIPOWER?

    In some circumstances billing procedures automatically deduct a percentage from the bill for Direct Debit payment. In these circumstances the work-around we use is to ADD a percentage to the bill first so that when the deduction is made it comes back to the correct EQUIGAS or EQUIPOWER bill. Sorry, we know it sounds a bit daft, but that’s computer systems for you! We are working to remove this oddity.
