Jacket spuds - can I freeze em?

Options
I want to bake a whole bag of spuds in the oven (saves on electricity), but can I freeze them? And how do I defrost / heat them again?

I've never tried to freeze jacket potatoes but IME potatoes on their own don't freeze well unless oven chips!

I'd think they'd go a bit too mushy when they're defrosted and the skins could be a bit rubbery. Maybe try one and see.

  • I have seen in the frozen section in a supermarket frozen jacket potatoes with cheese, so I'm presuming they'd freeze ok.

BUT....I'm with finc on this one about the rubbery skins :(

If you give it a try, please pop on and let us know if they freeze ok..as they'd be handy for a quick meal.

Hi I used to work in a restaurant and they bought in Jacket spuds frozen, they used to microwave them to reheat, they were fine. It isn't the same as fresh though

Just slightly under cook them - so when you warm them up they still have that extra bit of moisture - I find they freeze okay.
  • My "Can you freeze it?" book recommeds scooping out the insides and mixing with a little cheese, but I've frozen them whole and they've been fine reheated in the oven (I'm not a fan of microwave heated jacket pots)
  • Just found this old thread I have baked aload and am going to try freezing them....any tips?

I find they freeze ok. I usually slightly undercook them, let them cool and wrap in foil. I've never had any probs. I usually take out of freezer the morning i'm going to be having them for tea so they are defrosted and i reheat in oven with rest of tea.

  • I find the texture rather strange unless you reheat them in the oven

We use frozen pre cooked ones where I work and they do 5 mins in the micro (ours are high powered so perhaps 10 mins in a domestic)

I personally havent tried one as to me they look vile but the others I work with say they are good and we never have any sent back uneaten
