Is there a cheap way? I suspect not but thought I'd ask.

We have an area of the garden where everything dies, despite not having put any weedkiller down for the fifteen years we have been tending the garden.

You mean dies down to bare earth? So everything dies? We need some more info, how big is this area to start with?
