My fears are now confirmed by the power of the internet and therefore the MG on a K series engine is off the list :-)

Switched now to an ST ford (2000-2004 models) or maybe a Leon Cupra or the 2.5 V6 ZS

    Very wise...;)

good choice avoid the sh1te MG's,i personally know just how bad they are/were hence the reason they went bump.
my brother worked at Longbridge for many years and had numerous different rovers/mg's on the employee scheme and they all had problems ranging from engine or transmission faults that required component change to spurious electrical defects on the streetwise where everything went completely dead inside the car.
at the time the cars were almost new from memory i think they kept cars for 9 months before changing.

the reason the k-series was so bad is when rover and honda went their own ways honda took all there tooling with them so the k-series was built with poor quality tools, hence why they suffer from HGF problems i also remember around 1996 the k-series suffered with crankshaft end float issues.
On a visit to MG dealer very close to longbridge once there must have been about 10 fooked engines out the back being loaded in to a rover branded lorry hardly inspired confidence in the brand.

stick with the leon or focus far superior cars in my opinion (and that coming from someone who really dislikes fords!)

I'm not going to join in the "Mgs are rubbish / oh no there not / oh yes they are" discussion, but I have a 53 plate MG ZR 1.8 120+

Yes, its head gasket did go, but this was partly my fault. I had it repaired properly, and have done more than 50,000 miles since the single repair. The car has just over 100,000 on the clock. It is showing no signs of problems currently.

Going back to the OPs question though, I would avoid the car in question on the forecourt. Why would anyone fix the headgasket properly then flog the car?

Because they know it will go again and they know how much it costs to take the engine out to get at it :T
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
