Student nursing

Options
hello

This is a very prelimanary question. I'd really love to go into nursing but currently earn about £20k and I'm not sure we can afford it. Is it possible to recive both student loans and a bursary? How much could these be? I'd be willing to work too but can't afford a huge drop in income. How much income could I realistically get whilst training/studying?

TIA :)

  • i currently work for the NHS and quite a lot of my co-workers are student nurses, im pretty sure they get around 7k bursary but as far as im aware they dont get student loan (we are in scotland). although dont take this as the rule, its just what ive heard through the grape vine ;)

    good luck
Rude people are a fact of life, if you wrestle with a pig you will stink! There's no getting around this concept. If you allow yourself to go someone's level you will only bring yourself down.

You can get a reduced rate of student loan only if you receive the income-assessed NHS bursary.

There is a NHS bursary calculator here that may or may not be useful

    http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/816.aspx

and there are also guides about filling in the forms that have information in them about additional funding e.g. if you have children or are a mature student you get a little more

Alternatively you could give them a ring. They have always been lovely when I've had questions (but be warned there may be queues on the phone, its a busy time of year for them)

My sister gets about £2000 from student loans and about £4000 from NHS bursaries (these are very rough figures). The £2000 has to be repaid and the £4000 doesn't.

    Good luck

Depending on which course you take either Diploma or degree will depend on how much bursary you will recieve. Im doing the diploma, I get £530 a month, which is non-means tested. I have friends doing the same but as they have children they recieve more. When on placement milage costs are reimbursed, which does help. I have recived over £450 back sometimes, depending on how far away the placement is. Part time work can be done, I always work my bum off when at uni as most weeks we are only in 2-3 days so that does help me get by. They only debt i will have when qualified (In Jan) will be my student overdraft. Not too sure when you are on about applying but i know the diploma course is being phased out.

Its a fantastic course, i would advise anyone that thinks they can do it to do!! I love it!

PM me if you want to know any more x x x

The funding for nursing is likely to change in line with other courses towards the end of 2011. There is a review currently taking place. The diploma is being phased out and because of this there are a huge number of applications at the moment. Universities are admitting that they are turning away perfectly good candidates simply because there are not enough spaces.

People have dropped their income by more but be prepared to get a part-time job to support yourself if necessary.

Are you living with a partner/parents etc? Do you have children? All these things will influence the money you receive.

There is no longer extra money for being a mature student, that was stopped a couple of years ago due to age discrimination laws
