I always haggle! Most of the time they say yes. That 20p saved goes towards something else! If they say no and I really want it, then I'll have it still but at least I've tried

The bootfair I need a few weeks back had some great moments.
I was there to get rid of as much as possible so was accepting most offers - apart from the ones where a woman wanted all 3 of my suits (all Next trousers suits & only worn a few times) for £2.50. I was asking for £5 each! I stuck to my guns & ended up selling all 3 for £12.50.
The funniest moments were near the end & I was desperate to off load as much as possible. One man asked how much I wanted for 4 baby toys (which I had been selling for 20p each), I said make me an offer & he offered £4 for the lot. Needless to say I jumped at the chance.
The other one was a guy who, I think, expected a bit of a haggle when he asked how much I wanted for a complete crockery set for 4 (plates, side plates cups, bowls). When I said £1 he paid & couldn't shove them into his bag quick enough! I didnt mind though as if they hadnt gone then I would have had to load them into the car & then take them to the nearest charity shop.

When I go to boot fairs I do haggle for some bits, but only if I think they are overpriced. I feel bad haggling someone down for something when I am happy to py the asking price.

If I really really want something and I think it is too much I will haggle, but if I think it's a bargain anyway I don't, That way I feel like some I win some I don't but I still got a bargain. :)
  • Oh dear, I've just agreed to do a boot fair with my friend on Sunday. I find the haggling quite draining! I don't mind the haggling in principle but when I'm only asking 50p in the first place I find it's a bit of an insult. I think I need to find some thicker skin in order to cope, lol.
Cos I don't shine if you don't shine.
  • Haggling is a drain I feel as if I have just given the stuff away. The thing that annoys me (and yes I believe foreigners are the worst) is the hands on approach. I had a sealed duvet for sale only for a woman to walk up and open it . Me being britsih was too meek to stand up to her. Last week had an unused Bodyshop case with goodies wrapped up. My attention taken up for one moment and someone had opened it up in full and unwrapped the goodies then walked off when she didnt like the price. Now I cant get it back to how it was.

My friend told me about a car boot that he did - he had a brand new car piece, still in the box and all - perfect condition.
If you bought it new from a car spares place, it would cost in excess of £70.
A lady approached and asked him how much - he said £1 - she almost threw it back down as if it had burnt her before
    walking away shaking her head...!!
Some people really do expect the earth, and for you to deliver it too...!!

On the other hand, I got rid of a toilet seat that didn't get any takers on freecycle, but i managed to sell it for £5
and the couple looked overjoyed at such a bargain...!!!!!!!
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

    Don't worry it's fun really!
We didn't put prices on anything and just said a slightly higher price than we were prepared to take. Most people made an offer and we met in the middle so everyone was happy.

We made £150 in just over 2 hours so it was well worth doing.
    Enjoy! :rotfl:

    I've been Money Tipped!
Eugh - haggling at boot fairs.

Some people just can't accept that if you offer them a dirt cheap start price of £5 you will not accept an offer of 50p.
Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?
  • I did a car boot with a friend recently and she was selling a bottle of perfume which was new and unused. In the end we had to put a sign on it saying 'NO TESTING' as when we looked at it the bottle was no longer full due the amount of people spraying it!

  • I never haggle as a buyer. I usually bu books, I know most people sell them 3 for a £1 (paperbacks), and if I see a stall selling them for £1 or more each, I just walk by.
