Why would I have opened a M&S Everyday Savings Account

Marks & Spencer have just changed their 'Your Accounts' so that as well as seeing credit cards you can now see savings accounts on the same login. And lo and behold I have a savings account I didn't know existed and can't work out why I would have opened. I haven't put my full ISA allowance in last year so I don't know why I wouldn't have put it in that (also with M&S).

Can anyone remember if there was any offer (extra points on credit card etc) that would have led to my opening this account on 21 August 2009?

At least I've got £200 I didn't know I had :j

No, that would explain why I had forgotten about it, not why I opened it in the first place ...

Could it have been opened automatically with the ISA?
I know NatWest used to do this, so that if you oversubscribed to your ISA they would have the savings account to dump the extra money into.
Doesn't explain the £200, unless you did oversubscribe.

Nope, doesn't coincide with any ISA opening or payments - the only payments to that ISA 2008-9 went in in March, and the next year's (2009-10) wasn't opened until February. And the interest is added in May so wasn't that either.

I think it was probably an extra points offer 'cos I usually go for them, but I can't find out where I found out about it. Time to delve into the paperwork folder I think.

There was a points offer in July 2009.

"MandS Credit Card and Chargecard holders who open an "Everyday' account before 17 July 2009 can earn up to 2,000 MandS points. The number of points you receive will be based on the cleared balance that you have in your account as at 31 July 2009**."

    Perhaps the offer was extended.

If there were 10 points per £ invested that would explain why you opened an account with £200.

So did you get the 2000 points?

    It was a joke:A

I very much doubt the M&S would make an error, open an account and credit you with £200. Lucky you :T

You can't remember some special deal, opening an account or why = a very bad case of Altzhiemers, poor dear :(

I know it was a joke, but not very funny to people actually affected by Alzheimers ...

No it's definitely not an error as I can see a corresponding £200 leave my current account now I've looked for it.

Thanks alanq, it looks like a repeat or extension of that offer, as that would explain why it wasn't just £1 that opened the account.

It wasn't really an important question, I'm not sure how helpful they'd be when I rang up asking why I'd opened the account. And it looks like I have got an answer now ...
