Gas advice please!

Hi

Newbie here

I dread it every 6 months when the gas bill comes - I was always seem to pay high gas bills.

At the moment I am paying £200 a month for Gas & Electric.

My house is 5 bedroom, 7 people living the house, my parents, my sister, wife and 2 children.

My parents are in at home every day, me, wife and sister are at work and kids at school on a working day of the week.

Electricity I have tried to cut this down by making sure every single light switch is energy one and switching off electricity when items are not in use.

Gas this is where the problem comes.

Firstly I have to 2 X combi boilers installed approx 9years ago, running 14 raditors. Alpha CB28 Non Condensing

At the time of these getting installed I was not consulted it was all done by my father.

There is insulation in the loft and we have got someone coming to look to see if we have captivity wall insulation.

A few questions

Is the reason why my bills are so high because I have 2 Boilers?

Will Thermostats help?

What is the correct temperature for setting the thermostat control, I tell my wife it is 21 and she say 24 as this is what the place who installed it at told it was.

I may think of more questions and post them later

Please can anyone give me any help or advice, thanks!

When you say thermostat at 21 or 24, do you mean the one in your hall? If so it should be about 18.

To get more helful answers you need to post the number of units you are using per fuel not the amount you are paying.

You say "I dread it every 6 months when the gas bill comes ", this implies you are paying when the bill comes. To get the best prices and to even out your payments you should be on a DD tariff.

18 is what I'm usually at but lower in summer, not sure what your timers are set to but if its an extended period due to people being in all day you might find you can get away with 16, set it to something close sensible and perhaps start sneaking it down by a degree or so each week until people start complaining.

There is no 'correct' setting, if you want to heat your house to sub-tropical climate levels set it up to 21-24 degrees but you'll pay hansomly for the privilidge. if you want your house at a 'normal indoor' temperature for the UK 18-20 is probably closer to the average...

Feel free to put it up a few degrees if its the middle of winter and you get cold but be aware you're paying for those extra degrees and put it back down when the weather eases.

If you don't need your hot tap water scalding hot you can turn that setting down too to save money.
  • Is a Non Condesing or Condesing boiler better?

    Thanks
