Welcome letter from NPOWER..... What is happening?

Hi everyone, received a letter a couple of days ago from NPOWER welcoming me to my new house that I moved to a month or so ago. I have actually owned the house I have moved to for more than five years and have the gas supply through british gas and the electricity with EDF energy in my name. The letter was strangely thanking me for choosing Npower and reasurring me that I will be enjoying lots of savings with them.

Now I didn't know who the hell Npower were before contacting them by phone when I was told that they are a gas and electricity suppliers and that my name and address are not registered on their database as a current or potential customer and they didn't know why I received this letter that didn't have any account or reference number on it.

I thought I should probably ignore this letter but with all the scary stories about people suddenly finding themselves with companies that they've never heard of I am wondering whether there are any further steps I should be taking to protect myself. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

  • Only other thing you can do realistically is to phone British Gas & EDF to make sure you're still registered with them.

Phone your current suppliers to just check - they will know if anything is happening. Npower haven't got the greatest reputation for their customer services, but having said that getting a letter with both your name and address on it is kind of strange...

Thanks for the replies. Spoke to my suppliers who said that I was still with them (as far as they can tell!!!). I still can't get my head around how this letter found its way to me but will keep you guys posted if anything changes.

If it was not addressed to you by name, you'd just moved into the house (having just bought it) and just said "welcome to your new home", I could understand it - they could get your details from the Land Registry information on house purchases.

But in your circumstances (already owning it, and saying they were going to supply you) I DON'T understand!

  • There have been stories about unscrupulous energy sales teams just filling in forms and forging signatures...and only when you get a bill from the 'new' energy supplier do you get to find out about it. So I'd ring NPower and ask for a copy of the agreement that you supposedly signed to join them....and watch their @rse fall out.......you might have been scammed by a dodgy salesperson and so make sure you complain as much as possible and then threaten them with Watchdog!!!

I'm surprised you hadn't heard of NPower, but then as I come from the Midlands and they were once the MEB, then it's not surprising I've heard of them.

They were a poor company as the MEB, they are a poor company as NPower, they are one of two companies I wouldn't touch due to both being incompetent, the other being British Gas.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

My mother started paying two energy bills over 4 months and i happened to look at one bill and wondered why we were charged by two companies for electric. So after some investigation i realised my mom had seen the bill arrive and being scared about being cut off she paid them. She had never signed anything to switch companies. So i wrote to the company and they said my mom had signed something-and that some advisor had come to the door and had it signed.
Asked my mom-and she is elderly-she recalled an advisor calling sometime and she had not let him in or signed anything.
Went back to the watchdog...the company said the so called advisor had left the company so had no clue about the circumstances. So i said show me the signed contract. Apparently it was 'misplaced in a new paperwork system'- they then had to refund monies paid and apologise.

its crazy people can just forge forms and get people scared into paying for things they have no signed for!!! it makes me so mad because there are people who can barely pay and dont need the headache that i went through trying to get to the bottom of this- cost me all the letter writing and phonecalls and stamps and time!...took 5 months to come to a conclusion!!!!
