Im looking for a bit of advice for my dad, he need to get some stuff off his old laptop but cant remember the password to start it up.
Is there anything he can do?

"To start it up" - what do you mean? Do you mean the Windows login screen, or is it a BIOS password (requested before Windows even begins to load)?
What make and model of laptop? What version of Windows?0 -

It is the windows login password.
not sure of model its a Dell laptop with windows XP0 -

Download the bootable CD version, read the help pages and it will allow him to reset any account to have a password of his choosing.0 -

If XP.
F8 on start up.
login as administrator in safe mode
Goto user accounts
pick account you've forgotten password.
click "remove password"
restart computer in normal mode.0
