My car reg number written down.

Today, this afternoon. I was in Sainsbury's at Shorehead in Huddersfield and as is my want, i leave my tickets on dozens of car windscreens advising and warning of the scam PPC's perpetrate, ie conning or rather extorting money from those with out the knowledge of how the likes of Perky of the pies and his ilk operate.

Again when i went to leave i had a "chat" with the clown wearing a hi viz vest bearing the logo Euro Car Parks emblazoned on it because i had the audacity to let an elderly lady know how these scamster's operate when she had to get out of her car to show "it" the Euro Car Park attendant a receipt to show she had been shopping there.

I gave her one of my "tickets" and told her how they operate, she did seem pleased and i hope she is looking around the net right now. The attendant was not pleased whatsoever. He was visibly irate and wanted rid of me sharpish. I told him the signs behind him saying people will be "fined" for parking in a disabled bay when not displaying a badge were illegal and would be reported to Trading Standards, he just wished me a happy day.

Anyway, i went to shop there but ended up not paying a penny has they have increased their crates of Carlsberg by £6.10 so i went to Lidl they're cheaper there.

I needed petrol so i only got £10 worth has i would rather fill up at a store more customer friendly regarding parking and whilst i was getting the petrol who should saunter towards the petrol pumps but the guy from Euro Car Parks and started writing my number plate down.

I wonder what is going to happen now? Am i bothered? Absolutely not.

People who can carry out such work make me absolutely sick. Getting an elderly lady out of her car to get to the shopping bags in her back seat made me furious, I bought nothing, i can speak up for myself and did i have to get out of my car to produce a receipt? No.

Imagine having to work in a car park on a Sunday afternoon on minimum wage trying to extort money from people to justify your existence.

I i do so hope she looks on the websites available to her.

Congrats, hope she tells them where to go, figuratively speaking, that is.

Well done driver8, I also carry with me a few notes with pepipoo and this website on them and a sentence about parking tickets on private land being unenforceable.

But I only really have time to look around me to see if anyone has got a PPC ticket, and if so I slide one of my notes underneath - where the PPC chimp cannot see it but the driver will find it!

I wonder what ECP will do - if they send you a letter do post it up here, they are skating on thin ice if they threaten you for telling people the truth about their tickets. I too would laugh if they wrote my numberplate down, who on earth do these companies think they are ?

    Well done you.

What can they do ? You have not broken any law. You have provided a service and a warning to them. The more people who know about this the better.

It's no different than leaving a flyer on a car from the local pizza-parlour. So they can't do anything about it.

After receiving one of these "fines" myself on Friday (posted on another thread!) I have told everybody I meet that these "fines" are unenforcable, people have no idea and many have been caught out and paid up! The more I've looked into these "scams" and how they get your information and hold the registered keeper liable, I've been so cross! I've even written to my local rag, I wonder if they will print my letter? Probably not!!

Dave, here it is with the help from a poster on pepipoo (thankyou) but needs updating with the youtube clip from Watchdog.........

PRIVATE PARKING TICKETS - DON'T PAY!
IT IS NOT A FINE! YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING ILLEGAL!

This is an information page for the thousands of people who receive "tickets" from private companies in the UK ever day at supermarkets, retail parks, and in any other privately-owned carpark.

We are NOT encouraging anybody to openly flout parking restrictions on private land, or to refuse to pay reasonable charges for parking. Landowners have a right to make reasonable charges for the use of their land.

For advice specific to your case, you should visit the forums at http://forums.pepipoo.com or http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/parking-traffic-offences.

    1. What you should know about these companies

It is important to remember that private parking companies (or PPCs as they are often called) have NO OFFICIAL POWERS - that's right, none at all! They give out their "tickets" on the basis that you have seen the signs in their car park and that you have therefore agreed to a contract obliging you to pay a certain sum of money.

    2. What happens to people who don't pay?

In 99.9% of cases, absolutely NOTHING! The company pays the DVLA £2.50 to get your address, and then sends lots of threatening letters. In the main, these letters can be safely IGNORED. The only way the company can actually force you to pay is by taking you to the small claims court, which costs them even more money. And they are by no means guaranteed to win! And they practically never do.

The two main reasons for this (among others) are the following:

    - Only the person DRIVING the car could ever have agreed to any such parking contract. The company can only get the Registered Keeper's address from the DVLA: you don't have to tell them who was driving.

-Many of these charges are so extortionately high that they constitute a penalty, which is unenforceable in a consumer contract.

    3. Can they affect my credit rating?

NO! The only way your credit rating could be affected by ignoring private parking companies is if you were taken to court, lost, and then still refused to pay. But they will not take you to court.

    IN SHORT

The vast majority of the time, you can safely IGNORE tickets from private parking companies, they are not official fines.

The vast majority of the time, you can safely IGNORE the threatening letters, including those from debt collection agencies.

You DO NOT have to pay a penny of your hard-earned money to these companies. Remember that the chances of being taken to court are very slim indeed.

    DO NOT IGNORE COURT PAPERS!
If you receive real court papers from a private parking company (very rare) then you should go to http://forums.pepipoo.com or http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/parking-traffic-offences for help defending the claim. Do not be afraid to sign up and ask questions regarding any paperwork you are not sure about.
