Rent a Room issues

Hi All, just want you opinions on the situation...

I'm looking to rent a room out in my flat for a bit of extra cash. I've advertised and had only one real procedable response (i.e a female despite it clearly saying female enquirers only!
p
We met, along with her mother, and tbh her mum seemed to like it more than she did (so quiet! so safe! it's a geriatric part of town so yeah) so I was surprised to get a call from her today.

She wants the room on the following provisos
A chest of drawers (have a spare set so OK)
New curtains (small window so eh)
She brings her own bed because mine is too low (ok, fine)
A swivel chair (...)
Possibly a bigger desk (...)
The notice period is 14 days, not 7 as I want it to be (!!!)

On the one hand, she seems nice, quiet, studious and I've had no better offers. On the other hand she's being quite demanding already, and she hasn't moved in yet!

I will hold my hands up and admit I said "Is there anything you need" and got the list above so I am to blame. Hah, amateur.

Thanks for the advice people, I've decided not to progress with this lodger.

Goodness that is a long list! I would be prepared to only meet the low cost options or ones that you think would be a useful purchase for the room. Ask her if she is willing to provide some of the more expensive items.

She didn't say the desk and chair have to be new so take a look on Freecycle and gumtree to see if you can pick them up cheaply ;)

Yea freecycle is always a good idea and gumtree go to the freebies part :)
  • You may know the maxim 'start as you mean to go on'? -try applying that from both perspectives in this story.....in my view a different lodger might be a less demanding option.
    Good Luck

Not particularly fussy. Particularly as she is on a short notice period.
New curtains (small window so eh)
    Fussy
She brings her own bed because mine is too low (ok, fine)
    Fussy
    A swivel chair (...)
    Possibly a bigger desk (...)
Is she a student? If she is it's not fussy if she isn't then it is fussy.

I can understand that. She needs to be able to find somewhere to move to even if it's family and friends who put her up.

I hope you have discussed all the house rules with her particularly cleaning up after herself and visitors.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

I'd go for it. All stuff I'd need and probably mum sticking her oar in - that won't last. And you get rid in 14 days - that sounds reasonable. (If you get that fed up with each other you'll agree quicker anyway).
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

What rent is she going to be paying? You are probably talking £100 for that lot if you went to IKEA

Do you think the demands will stop if she moves in?

Do you live near a hospital op? Thats where I found all my lodgers, and they have all been great, intelligent, well paid lodgers, who if you get a junior doc are hardly ever there, and when they are are usually studying.

She sounds far too demanding, especially for someone who only wants it for a short time. I'd turn her down flat.
