HBOS student accounts difficult to get?

Is anyone else finding it difficult to get a HBOS student account with the advertised £2750 overdraft?

Just wanted to see if other people are experiencing similar difficulties getting hold of this account with the 'biggest overdraft on the market', or if you are lucky and have been successful. If you have, what was the overdraft offered? Is HBOS living up to its marketing promises?

This is my situation:

I currently have a student account with HSBC but wanted to switch to Halifax. I'm normally in credit, have one credit card that I don't use, and have a fair bit in savings accounts with Halifax. Considering I've banked with the Halifax for 3 years I wasn't expecting problems, but this is what happened:

When I phoned up to open the account they only offered me £1000, that's £1750 less than advertised, and £750 less than my current one with HSBC. Also I more or less had to beg the person to tell me what the overdraft was (they do not tell you as part of the application process)! If I hadn't I would have been stuck with this highly uncompetitive overdraft for months while I tried to sort this out!

When I tried going into my branch the computer declined.

I've been at uni for 3 years so this is not a case of not having a credit history.

I applied on the phone for a halifax student account (want to move from natwest), I was accepted with a standard £500 overdraft, but have to go into the branch on friday with proof of being a student and at which point I can enquire about getting a higher overdraft. Ill post back with what happens, the first thing I was told on the phone though was that £2750 is the apsolute maximum you will get, hence probably wont.

    But we shall see. :)

I hate natwest anyway so I want to move whatever.
  • Yeah, I love how their selling point is the biggest overdraft on the high street, but once you get it it's no better than the others. Halifax are rubbish anyway, dreadful customer service and no help if you find yourself in financial difficulty. They seem to chuck out the £30 fines worse than any bank i've ever been with.
  • I have recently moved from HSBC, a lot harder to do than they made out... apparently because i had Student Account they couldn't automatically contact HSBC and transfer my direct debits, standing orders etc so I had to do it manually (another story, sorry!).

I initially got given £500 overdraft, not enough to cover my HSBC account so I had to prove my overdraft at HSBC was £1100, the branch then sent this proof to head office where they reluctantly increased my OD to 1000! Apparently they cannot increase it until they have seen that my student loan will go into my account and then i have to apply for the amount i want!

Ive just seen there new TV advert for the BEST student account with biggest (2750) overdraft... Hmmm... We'll see!

I too have only been given £500 of the advertised £2750 overdraft on my halifax account, the woman who set it up said very few students manage to get the full 2750, and for it to be raised you need regular credits going into your account, so now i have a standing order paying in i will go in soon and ask for it to be raised.
