How much pension?

Options
I've been rummaging around the net looking for an explanation of how the percentage disability is worked out for war pension purposes. (That's to say the pre-2005 scheme.) I've looked on the official sites and they're vague.

Does anyone know of any sources of info on this?

    Hi,

    I have just spoken to my brother who is a War Pensioner and sits on a War Pensions Committee (and does welfare stuff for ssafa and the Legion etc).

    From what he says, unlike the new Armed Forces Compensation Scheme which lays down a 'tarriff' for injuries sustanied, there is no equivalent under the old War Pension Scheme. What happens is that when one applies for a War Pension, all the evidence is obtained and a decision on the percentage disability is made by one of the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency medical officers. It works similar if one asks for a review of ones War Pension, ie the decision is again made by one of the SPVA medical officers based on evidence supplied. There is a right of appeal (however often slow and laborious) or one can take their 'complaint' to a local War Pensions Committee (they have changed names now to Veterans Advisory and Pensions Committee) who can also look into a case.

    Under the new Armed Forces Compensation system, decisions on claims are made by lay decision makers based on advice from medical officers and as laid down in the 'tariff'.

    Hope that helps,

    Tally

    That depends on what your problem is.

    I took my case to tribunal back in 2003 and won. I had an increase in the pension from 30% to 40%. I was told I had no chance by the RAFA agent with me. It did take a few years in total. I initially applied in late 1999.

    I applied for a war pension last year when i left the RN and like you i could not find any info on rates of disability and pension. The whole process basically went;

    1) Application providing as much details as possible
    2) Visit to Doctor nominated by the War pension people to assess my injuries
    3) Decision with right of appeal of 6 months.

    The whole process took 6 months to complete
    Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.
