Architrave and skirting query

Do people usually have the same thickness of skirting and architrave, or do they have thicker architrave in order to have it standing out a little?
I'm in the process of getting quoted for new skirtings etc and one timber merchant insists I should have thicker architrave. That's the only company who have said that and I've never heard of doing that before, hence my query.
I've got blocks at the moment but want a more contemporary look so am just having the skirting butting up to the architrave, in case it makes a difference to the answers.
Edit: Is a plain square edged profile a square edged profile and a roundover is a roundover no matter where you get it? Surely there can't be differences in a square edge or a roundover assuming the thickness and height of the board is the same?

I would just go for the same thickness if it was me or whatever is available at reasonable price that you like the look of. So long as the skirting isn't thicker than the architrave creating a step out the other way from architrave to skirting then i don't think it matters.
You don't necessarily have to have same style of skirting and architrave either. Traditionally the height of the skirtings reflected one's wealth....most of our skirtings are actually torus-style architrave i believe so not very tall at all - go figure!0 -

I toyed with that idea. I have several lengths of oak ogee skirting here but I want plain architrave now and I just feel it should match. OH isn't chuffed the ogee stufff wont be getting used. Oh well.Herman - MP for all!0
