EA Games

I registered a game with EA Games in December last year.
On my birthday earlier this month, I got an email from them saying happy birthday and giving me a code for £10 off my next order of £10 or more from the EA store.

I went to the online store last week and tried to order 2 items with a total cost £13.49.

I put my money off code into the correct box and clicked apply but it didn't work.
After trying a few times and checking the voucher was still valid with dates etc, I emailed customer services and told them the code wasn't working.

I got a reply today saying the following:

Thank you for contacting Electronic Arts.
I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you. At the moment we are unable to generate 10 pound off codes. If you would like, you may purchase the game at full price. Once the charges have cleared, I would be able to process a credit of 10 pounds to the account. I will just need the order number for the transaction. Or I am able to generate 20% off code.
Please make sure that your purchase amount should be more than 10 Pounds.
If there is anything else we may do to assist you please let us know.

So basically, if I'm reading this right, I have to spend £10 to get £10 credited to my account?

I'm not a big gamer and only ordered the 2 items because I could use them with the original game I had registered. There aren't any other items I want/need so the £10 credit to my account would sit there unused while I was out of pocket because I'd had to buy the item I was told I could have for free.

Surely this can't be right?

You are getting £10 for free in the end! They're having some sort of system issue and can't give you a £10 off code at the moment. If they're able to in the future, maybe they'd hold it and give you a new code when they can do it?
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Sadly, it's an offer they didn't have to give in the first place, so they can retract it or change it at any time they see fit.
