Bruised Apples & Windfalls

Has anyone done anything with bruised apples & windfalls etc.

Most recipes require good quality ones.

Has anyone used them for anything, shame to let them rot.

  • Hi, Chip! If they're going to be chopped up anyway, who's going to know that you removed a bad bit? I use these first, and store the best ones ( and use them for baked apples, as I did last night).

Uses - chutney, wine, chopped and frozen, apple sauce, apple pie, apple crumble, struesel, etc, ect, etc.

  • I use them in crumbles (cut the ming off) and also in jellies. This year I've made blackberry and apple and spiced cider and apple using windfalls and they've turned out fine.

  • Can't you freeze apples? Should they be part-cooked first?

I cut all the nasty bits off the bruised cooking apples in my garden & stew the apples. Once stewed I give lots away to friends & neighbours but always have enough for myself for daily yummy dishes.

Apple crumble, apple pie, good old stewed apple & custard, apple mixed with other soft fruits, there are many possibilities. For savory dishes apple added to curry is lovely & I often add chopped apple to mixed salad.

It's possible to freeze the stewed apple too, which is what I do & it's lovely to be still enjoying it through the winter & spring.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Hi, I don't always cook apple before I freeze it. I cut it into biggish chunks, dip in lemon juice, and freeze like that. This means you can just take out what you need, rather than a big block of puree. Having said that, I use my frozen apple long before the net season's fruit is ready.

  • I've just been given a bag of windfall apples, I'm going to cut of the manky bits & then make the Weetabix Cake to see how that turnes out, the rest I'll stew to make crumble or cobber with later.

.I cut out ant maggots or bad bits - but I leave the bruised sections in as apple takes on a brown tinge when cooked and the bruises taste sweeter anyway.

My sons fav is cooked apple and cinnamon (a touch of sugar) topped off with a layer of thick custard, all left to chill in the fridge.

Cheap as chips so they say!

    Hi All,
Our garden is absolutely covered in windfall bramley apples and rather than just chucking them on the compost I was wondering whether I could use them?
If I can, do any of you wonderful people have any recipes?
    Thank you in advance,
    T_M
