Bathroom plug hole has spots of rust - help!!

Hi
We had a new bathroom fitted in September 2009 and it would appear the sink plug hole has small rust spots appearing on the edge already :(
Does anyone know if there is a way to stop this? Is there any thing i can coat the plug hole with in order to stop more rust?

I'm really not happy as it's such a new bathroom - grrrrrrr!

Any help / suggestions would be great.

Thanks in advance :)

Considering that this is designed to constantly be in touch with water, I would think that developing rust spots would either make it faulty, a very poor quality one or not fit for the purpose. I'd contact whoever you bought this from and explain what's happened and that you'd like a replacement.

Or, you could make sure that after emptying the bath you dry it off.

If you're stuck with it try Shiny Sinks (it's like Cif) which you can get from most supermarkets, we had a Franke kitchen sink which developed rust spots and someone from Franke came to inspect it, brought Shiny Sinks with him and recommended we use it if it happened again.

nearly all the bath/sink/basin waste fittings are made in china now.
and the SS quality is pretty poor. hence the metal starts to rust pretty quickly.
the good point is that they are very cheap to replace.
    about 2.50p at toolstation etc...
    Get some gorm.

I hadn't even thought that replacing it was an option without replacing the whole sink!! Shows how lacking my DIY skills are :)
Is it quite an easy task to undertake?

Thanks to both of you for the advice / suggestions :)

If you can get to the underneath of it - you just unscrew the bit in the sinkhole, remove and replace. Normally some sort of seal or gasket to put in too.

Are there BASIN wastes out there made of chrome plated steel?

AFAIK they are c/p brass. ie; will not rust.

I assume the waste is fitted into a ceramic BASIN ?
Therefore any rust can only come from elsewhere. That's if it is rust, could be flux damage, have you had the waste cleared using acid?

Change the waste, but spend a bit more than £2.50 though. Maybe get the original installer to do it for you?

Buy from toolstation and your buying junk

PTS, Plumbcentre all sell chromed brass wastes. Bristan wastes are pretty good for the money and are solid brass....Bit more than £2.50!

Did you supply the sink etc to be fitted, or did you buy it as a whole package?
If it was the pckage, it's less than 12 months old, get whoever fitted it to put it right.
